Hello everyone,
I'm Russell and recently purchased a new in box SRS Covert in .308 and procured a Sightron 8-32X 56mm SIII scope and GGG bipod for which I have not assembled. Any recommendations on set up, where to shoot in the area and the best way to break the rifle in while learning the right way?
All suggestions appreciated!
Cheers,
Russell Moss

Re: New Covert owner in Colorado Springs
Russell,
Welcome to the DTA rifle world!!
As far as "breaking in your DTA", I don't know squat....my suggestion, is just go shoot!
Find some good factory ammo and start there.
Questions for you--do I want to hunt? do I want to shooot paper? do I want to shoot competitions? do I want to stretch the legs of my .308 and shoot long-range?
As for me, I do ALL of these things and I hope you try'em all out too.
If you reload, search lots and gain knowledge.
The .308 is a great "all-round cartridge." But the cool thing with the DTA is that you can swap barrels in less than a minute! You'll want MORE barrels, for different calibers.
So, Russell, my novice suggestions for you, are to get lots of ammo, buy the best optic you can afford and GO SHOOT!!!
PS- I have 2 DTA rifles and they are the most accurate rifles I've ever owned or shot.
Take care,
-Mike

Re: New Covert owner in Colorado Springs
Congrats on the covert! The covert in .308 is my personal fav of the family. Cheap to shoot, and still great range. Although I'm quickly becoming a fan of the 7 WSM.
Snap a couple pics and post on the "my DTA" thread!
we have a couple videos on the DTA youtube channel about setup/initialization and adding more a little at a time--feel free to check em out if you want. http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL ... e=view_all
re: break-in...to be honest, a lot of the guys here don't do any kind of break-in.
Congrats again--anxious for the update once you get out and put some rounds downrange...

Re: New Covert owner in Colorado Springs
Hello Dan & Mike...
Thanks for the words of encouragement, offering videos on YouTube and replying to my post. I REALLY am a newbie to the precision long range rifle world and followed the blogs and articles I could in trade and public reviews on the DTA family of bullpup weapons. So I've landed in Colorado from Oregon with the rifle, the OEM 70 in/lbs tool, the Sightron 8-32 X56mm reticle and no idea on optics placement, butt pad set up, (I think I've got the ammo choice in mind--Federal Match 175 grain boatail--at least I've read thats a premium sighting round) but to get to a range (I don't know of any in the area since I'm new) and mount the scope and bipod is where I'm wanted to get it right the first time. I know there's a
correct eye relief distance but I've never mounted a rifle scope. Also I purchased a Caldwell LeadSled bench shooting dual frame rig with 25 lbs of leadshot to help sight the Covert on.
With all that said I'd like to contact the gentleman in Denver (he's closer than Mike in Albuquerque I believe) and follow his lead on set-up, optics tips, gun handling, post range cleaning etc. Unfortunately being a rookie on the forum here I can't send personal messages SOOO if you're looking to mentor a guy with a new Covert 308 in the Colorado Springs wide vicinity I'll leave my email and phone number.
Thanks again,
Russell

Russell, may not be such a good idea to publish Phone numbers and email addresses in a public arena

Re: New Covert owner in Colorado Springs
Thanks for your sentiments/concerns. While I reveal I have scant experience in long range precision shooting, I HAVE in my repetoire a domicile composed of several former accomplished security industry gunners on a large well fortified spread. While I don't have DTA experience, I assure you my roomates and myself are quite proficient with close quarter combat, handgunning and class III weaponry. That's IF you get by a few surprises and defeat surveillance/early warning and some decidedly unfriendly canines. Other than that, feel free to drop in unannounced

Re: New Covert owner in Colorado Springs
Russell,
Any chance of a pic of your rifle?
My SRS has a Sightron SIII 6-24x50 on it, i have a covert on order and a new SIII 8-32x56 sitting on my desk. I was thinking about putting the 8-32 on the SRS but i havent made up my mind yet.

Re: New Covert owner in Colorado Springs
We don't break in our guns, for those who really want to then we put some basic instructions in the user manual as to how most people conventionally break in rifles. But it really is not necessary.
Colorado is good territory and I'm sure that you can find some good BLM land where you can shoot extended ranges.

Well its been hell starting a new job in the area and all that entails and the work site is ultra-secure so I've had no opportunity to get back to the Forum (Internet best sites Net Nanny'd off limits) on my progress (or lack thereof) in
getting the new Covert assembled. Without a firm grasp of the optic fundamentals of long range shooting I'm going on
faith that a non-ultra-high-end scope like Sightron would suffice my skill levels for the foreseeable future when coupled with a 16 inch barreled .308 weapon. That said Seddo, I would imagine that optics of 50mm objective lens size would
be comparable to the 8-32 X56mm size for the money difference. I can imagine that I'm gonna run out of adjustment
(elevation more than windage) at around 1000 yards or more from the discussion I see online about longer precision shooting. I'm not so worried if I can learn the fundamentals and good windage/elevation cheats/tables at my skill level because of the already mentioned short barrel of the Covert and about 600 yard limit of the 308 as a straight projectile.
As soon as I can find someone who can assure me that 70 in/lbs for all screws on the set up of the rings/rail/bipod is correct I'll set out to mount the 8-32 X56 Sightron III and try to get some snaps of it. This is a ground up learning process for me.
Cheers,
Russell

Re: New Covert owner in Colorado Springs
A max magnification of 26 or 32 power is overkill for a .308WIN unless you're doing benchrest shooting. The extreme magnification tends to reduce the amount of available elevation to work with. A 15x or 20x is often plenty to get a .308 to 1000 yards.
