Suggestion

Post by ShadowPeo »

Given the current "attack" by spammers perhaps changing registration to require "admin approval" to finalise registration, I know it makes administration a bit harder but ultimately its easier than having to remove multiple spam emails

+1. The spam attacks are a bit much. If nothing else, they get my hopes up seeing new posts!

I agree. Spam attacks on all forums seem to be up exponentially. Something certainly needs to be done to thwart these attacks. Good Luck

Hmm... my forum hasn't received a single spam message in about 2 years. :)

There are ways to ensure only humans can register and post.

Yes there are, I have implemented some on other forums, admin activation is a quick and dirty way of fixing it though

Hey Gents,

First time logging on since Fri. Changed a few things on before the weekend, but looks like we still got hit hard.

Apologize for the dog and pony show on this (unless you actually needed the viagra, in which case you're welcome...).

Took Shadow's suggestion and temporarily moved it to admin only. Apologize if any registrants have to deal with the lagtime-to-post before i update the captcha...

thx for the patience.

@db_17_85--I was thinking the same thing when I first opened it up and saw all the new checkmarks haha

In short yes, in reality it depends on the complexity of the CAPTCHA as while as good as OCR (Optical Character Recognition) is, it is difficult to do in a "noisy" image. Another common method however is one that cannot readily be defeated is a "bot" fills out the form but displays the CAPTCHA to a human (normally some poor sod in India that sits there all day entering CAPTCHA's) who enters the answer the bot then puts the answer into the field and continues on.
