Bolt maintenance

Post by Archaos »

What does everyone do to clean there bolts. I was thinking of dropping mine into my ultra sonic cleaner. Would that be a big no no or completely fine. It would be in pieces not complete. After ultra sonic cleaning it goes into a metho bath to get rid of the moisture.

I use a toobrush on the lugs and bolt face with whatever cleaner I have handy. Once in a while it is a good idea to take out the firing pin for cleaning and get any brass debris out that may have accumulated over time.

Thanks

I ended up pulling my bolt all apart and chucking it in the ultrasonic cleaner..... Well the water was black after and everything is clean. I was supprised how much gunk was inside.

Thanks for the input, guys. I only clean my barrels when accuracy starts to fade (usually after 200-300 rounds), but try to clean and lube my bolt after 3-4 range trips. Have not fully disassembled yet. Good shooting.

This is a question for Nick or one of the guys at DTA. I need to remove the extractor claw and small spring loaded pin in the bolt face. I can see a small roll pin that I am guessing will hold in the spring loaded pin in the bolt face, but can not see how the extractor claw is removed.

Long story is I had my 308 bolt micro slicked and its turned to micro chips. I am pulling the whole unit apart and cleaning it. At the moment it looks like its been through a war with less than a 1000 rounds through the rifle

I am toying with the idea of having the sleeve and body TiN coated.

If you knock out the roll pin the ejector will come out (watched the gunsmith do it to mine) but I'm not sure about the extractor.

Have most of the bolt stripped back and am slowly (very slowly) polishing it to remove all scratches for the TiN coating. Anyone ever removed the bolt arm, I can see it's threaded but it's in pretty well.

So here is what the bolt looks like now all stripped back. Just to make things worse I have been informed that the inside of the sleeve cant be coated due to how the coating is applied. Back to square one again. Might have to research more low friction coatings.
